"Senator Clinton is locking up New York fund-raisers."

Well, I suppose that comes as no surprise to anyone. She isn't exactly a favorite daughter, but she is a New York Senator. Still, it strikes me as kind of odd that wealthy fund raisers are jumping on her bandwagon this early. Don't get me wrong. I think Hillary Clinton has many fine qualities. For example, I think she could develop into a really excellent Senator some day. Possibly even become the first female Majority Leader. For some reason, though, it looks like her severely challenged Presidential bid is already being backed by some wealthy and influential fund raisers in New York.
Normally, as I understand things, many wealthy fund raisers usually back only two kinds of candidates. They either back candidates they truly expect to win, or (during the primary season) they may back candidates they would like to see win the nomination but lose the election. This is one reason why they often support candidates in both parties. Of course, they do much the same thing when they just don’t know who will win. However, they rarely give most of their support to party nominees who are expected to lose.
Given the field we see today, as well as the standard Republican attitude lately, it's a fair bet that the Republicans will nominate a Hawk in 2008. They'll probably try to avoid nominating a chicken-hawk, though. And some fund raisers will likely host $10,000 a plate dinners for whomever they nominate.
Now, this is not meant as any reflection on her other fine qualities, but from where I have stood from the very beginning on the subject of the war in Iraq, it looks to me like Senator Clinton has recently made a belated transformation from Hawk to Dodo. She says that she would not have voted for Mr. Bush’s war if she hadn’t been asked to do so. Well, to be fair, she also says something about not knowing then what she knows now, which is why I have promoted her from Hawk to Dodo. Nothing personal, I’m happy to do the same for all the legislators who knew nothing then and now are sorry they voted in ignorance to enable Bushco to invade Iraq. In my mind, John Edwards is now a Dodo, John Kerry is now a Dodo, George Bush is still and always will be a Dodo, Dick Cheney is a chicken-hawk, Dennis Kucinich is a Dove, Howard Dean and Al Gore are Owls, and Wes Clark is an Eagle. Barack Obama could be either a Dove or an Owl – I’ll wait to decide about that until after he’s fully hatched. But I digress.
So what sort of bird is it that some New York fund raisers want in the Whitehouse? Since they appear to be flocking to Hillary, it seems that they may want either a Dodo or a Hawk, or perhaps some cross between those to win the Democratic nomination. Being just a country boy, who gets to enjoy the occasional company of Eagles and Owls and all sorts of other birds right in my own back yard, I guess I’ll probably never understand what goes on in New York City. But I wonder if all this New York fund raising for Dodos and Hawks somehow has something to do with Pigeons. If so, I find that displeasing, as I personally think the Democratic Party, the country, and the planet would be much better off with an Eagle as our nominee. That’s the bird’s basket in which I hope to put all my eggs.
